At the end of your evaluation, the transplant team will meet to discuss your results. This team includes the health care providers you met during your work-up. They will discuss any concerns about your test results, and may suggest further testing.
You will be told whether or not the team recommends a heart transplant for you. If you are a good candidate for transplant, your transplant coordinator will meet with you to do further teaching. Family or friends who will provide you with support after transplant should attend this teaching session with you.
We will send the test results from your evaluation to your insurance company, to ask for approval of the surgery.
If you cannot have a transplant
If you do not qualify for a transplant—or you choose not to have a transplant—your doctors will discuss your other options for treatment. These may include:
- Medical management
- Heart surgery (such as bypass surgery or valve repair)
- A pacemaker or ICD (implanted cardiac defibrillator)
- A mechanical pump, called a VAD (ventricular assist device)
- Research studies
