Opportunities at University of Minnesota Medical Center and University of Minnesota Amplatz Children's Hospital

Cardiac Catheterization (University Campus)
Assist staff, patients and families during interventional cardiac procedure. Volunteer must be at least age 21. -
CHILD (Riverside Campus)
Assist staff working with infants and toddlers in the hospital’s day care center. -
Child Family Life (University Campus)
Work with children of all ages assisting in playrooms or clinics. -
Children’s and Adolescent Mental Health Unit (Riverside Campus)
Assist staff with 6-18 year old inpatients in a variety of activities. Must be 21 year old or older. -
Electroconvulsive Therapy (Riverside Campus)
Provide support to patients and staff on Electroconvulsive Therapy Unit. Volunteer must be at least age 21. -
Emergency Department (University and Riverside Campuses)
Assist patients, waiting families and staff. Volunteer must be at least age 21. -
Family Resource Center (University Campus)
Assist families of hospitalized children access online and written information about their child’s illness. -
Gift Shop Clerk (Riverside and University Campuses)
Wait on customers, operate cash register, and stock and straighten shelves. Day, evening and weekend shifts available. -
Hand Massage (University and Riverside Campuses)
Give the gift of hand massage to patients. Learn a simple technique using aromatherapy. -
Immunization Action Plan (Riverside Campus)
Enter data for a Hennepin County program aimed at increasing infant immunization rates. -
Information Desk Guide (University and Riverside Campus)
Create a welcoming environment for patients and visitors: guide visitors to their destinations. -
IV Infusion Clinic (Riverside Campus)
Assist Infusion Center staff with a variety of tasks, including working with patients, deliveries, stocking, room prep, and light clerical duties. -
Junior Volunteers (University and Riverside Campuses)
Summer program for 15-18 year-olds. High school students can learn about health careers and the hospital environment while volunteering during this 12-hour-per-week commitment. Applications available in spring. -
Library (University Campus)
Distribute a wide variety of reading materials via the library cart to pediatric and adult patients and their families. -
Mother and Father Goose (Riverside Campus)
Rock premature babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Shifts available 24 hours a day. -
Newsletter Editor
Help design a quarterly newsletter for the Volunteer Services Department of University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview. Collaborate with staff to interview, write and edit articles. -
Nursing Unit (Riverside Campus)
Work with patients and staff on busy patient care unit. -
Occupational Therapy (University Campus)
Position for pre-OT students. Observe different therapies and assist at treatment sessions. -
Office Assistant (Riverside and University Campus)
Assist departments with filing, data entry, etc. Computer skills and experience required. -
Oncology Clinic (University Campus)
Interact with patients and visitors in the cancer clinic. -
Patient Visitor (University Campus)
Support families during stressful periods of hospitalization. Provide companionship for adults and pediatric patients, and a diversion from patients’ treatments and procedures. Day, weekend and evening shifts available. -
Physical Therapy (University Campus)
Assist physical therapists as they work with patients. -
Radiation Therapy (University Campus)
Greet and assist patients, restock supplies and assist with clerical tasks. -
Radiology (University Campus)
Assist staff and patients in the Radiology department. -
Rehab Services (University Campus)
Assist with restocking supplies, cleaning equipment and clerical tasks. Four hours per week, weekdays. -
Retail Pharmacy Messenger (Riverside Campus)
Deliver prescriptions throughout the hospital. -
Special Events Assistant (University Campus)
Assist staff at special events designed to provide diversion and entertainment for patients and families. -
Spiritual Health (University Campus)
Through the coordinated efforts of the Chaplains department, volunteers from various religious denominations visit patients of their faith during hospitalization. -
Supply Chain (Riverside Campus)
Assist staff in busy hospital supply area by delivering equipment and medical packages to nursing units. -
Surgery Family Lounge (Riverside and University Campuses)
Answer phones, direct visitors and assist patients’ families during their wait, provide coffee/tea. Must be able to empathize with people who are under stress. Shifts available 9 a.m.-7:30 p.m. -
Transitional Services (Riverside Campus)
Assist staff with recreational activities for patients. -
Treat Trolley (University Campus)
Serve beverages and snacks to families of pediatric patients

Fairview Multiple Sclerosis Achievement Center
Assist patients with M.S. in a day-treatment program. Help with ceramics and other creative arts activities. Excellent opportunity for OT and PT students. Contact Heidi at 612-672-2815. -
Fairview Children’s Clinic
Read to children in the lobby of a busy pediatric clinic on University Avenue near the U of M. Volunteers needed M-F from 2:30-5, and Saturdays 11-2. Contact Julie Abear, Patient Care Supervisor at 612-672-2261. -
Fairview Domestic Abuse Services
Crisis Advocate: Provide crisis advocacy for hospital and phone clients who have experienced/are experiencing abuse and violence. Training provided. A variety of on-call shifts available. Contact: Joanne Seaburg, 612-672-2700. -
National Institute for Media and the Family
Help with office support and special projects for a national resource center for research, information and education about the impact of the media on children and families. Contact number: 612-672-5437. -
Wellness Connection
Medical Office Volunteer: data entry of client information, assist with documentation of client data and program outcomes. Requires strong organizational skills and experience with maintaining client charts. Training and supervision provided.
